On Thursday, November 21, New York City Football Club (NYCFC) announced a 20-year naming rights agreement with Etihad Airways for its new stadium in Queens, New York. The stadium, set to open ahead of the 2027 Major League Soccer (MLS) season, will be called Etihad Park. This partnership marks a continuation of their relationship, which began in 2014 and is considered the most significant commercial agreement in the club’s history.

The deal signals a transformative step for NYCFC, which has been playing home games at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field. The new purpose-built stadium will enhance the club’s branding and fan experience while opening up additional revenue opportunities. While the agreement’s financial details were not disclosed, NYCFC CEO Brad Sims emphasized its importance to the club’s growth and commercial success. The privately funded stadium is part of a larger development initiative in Queens.

Etihad Park is set to be more than just a sports venue. The development will include 2,500 affordable housing units and a public school, as well as hosting concerts and festivals. Sims noted the importance of creating a multipurpose space to serve the community year-round, saying, “This is a vibrant building that is not just open 17 times a year and dark the rest of the year.” This aligns with growing trends in stadium development that prioritize versatility and community integration.

The partnership with Etihad Airways enhances NYCFC’s ties to its global audience. As a sponsor since the club’s inception, Etihad’s involvement underscores its commitment to supporting the team and MLS’s expanding footprint. The stadium’s name, “Etihad Park,” was chosen to reflect New York City’s iconic green spaces rather than traditional terms like “stadium” or “arena.”

The stadium is expected to host more than MLS games, positioning itself as a cultural and commercial hub in Queens. Events such as concerts and festivals are anticipated to drive year-round activity. According to Sims, this approach will foster a connection with the local community, ensuring economic and social benefits.

As NYCFC prepares to move into its new home, the Etihad Park deal signifies a pivotal moment for the club. With its strategic location and multipurpose design, the stadium aims to set a new standard for sports venues while serving as a cornerstone for community development in Queens.
