Poll Shows Growing Support for Rajkumar at 35.2%, Incumbent Williams Leads with 46.6%

A recent citywide poll by United New Yorkers for Progress, an Independent Expenditure Committee supporting Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, highlights a competitive race for New York City Public Advocate. The survey, conducted from May 7th to May 11th among 1,996 likely Democratic voters via landlines and text-linked online surveys, carries a margin of error of 2.24%.

The poll indicates that Rajkumar is building strong support among voters aged 55 and older and gaining traction with younger demographics. Voters overwhelmingly prefer a Public Advocate who serves as an accomplished civil rights lawyer and coalition builder, with 79.8% favoring this profile over a figure focused primarily on protest politics. A strong majority of respondents, 82.8%, view the office as the people’s lawyer and a voice for government accountability rather than a platform for publicity stunts, priorities that align closely with Rajkumar’s background in civil rights advocacy and legislative accomplishments.

The poll also reveals that 57.8% of respondents agree it is important to elect a woman to at least one citywide office, and 55.2% support the saying, “If you want something done, give it to a busy woman.” These sentiments underscore the growing appeal of Rajkumar’s campaign, which resonates with many voters’ views on leadership and accountability.

Rajkumar has made notable gains, securing 35.2% support and increasing momentum among key voter groups. Meanwhile, incumbent Public Advocate Jumaane Williams holds a 46.6% share of voter preference, with 18.2% still undecided.

While Rajkumar’s campaign continues to expand its base and align with voter priorities, the overall data indicate that Williams maintains a lead heading into the June Democratic primary. The race remains closely watched as both candidates seek to broaden their support before the election.
