Breaking News: Helicopter Carrying Iran’s President Makes Crash Landing in Foggy Conditions

On Sunday, May 19th, a helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials made a crash landing in a fog-shrouded mountainous region in northwest Iran. The incident has triggered a large-scale rescue operation amid challenging weather conditions, with President Raisi’s condition remaining unclear.

State media reported that the helicopter, part of a convoy returning from the inauguration of a dam on the Aras River near the Azerbaijan border, crashed near the village of Uzi. The helicopter was carrying several high-profile figures, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian and East Azerbaijan Governor Malik Rahmati.

Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi stated, “Various rescue teams are on their way to the region but because of the poor weather and fogginess it might take time for them to reach the helicopter.” Harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain and fog, have complicated the rescue efforts, with at least 40 teams deployed, including drones and search dogs.

State TV has been continuously broadcasting prayers for Raisi’s safety, and religious gatherings have been held across Iran, including at the holy sites in Qom and Mashhad. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also urged the public to pray for Raisi and the other officials onboard.

The incident comes at a sensitive time for Iran, which has been dealing with significant internal and external challenges. These include mass protests, economic sanctions, and recent military actions, including an unprecedented drone-and-missile attack on Israel. Raisi, a hardliner and a protégé of Khamenei, has been a contentious figure, both domestically and internationally.

In case of Raisi’s incapacitation or death, Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber would temporarily assume the presidency, with new elections required within 50 days.

The incident underscores the difficulties faced by Iran’s aging fleet of helicopters, which has been affected by international sanctions limiting access to necessary parts and maintenance.

As the situation develops, the international community remains closely watchful, with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev offering assistance and expressing concern. The unfolding events highlight the precarious balance of power and the potential implications for Iran’s political stability.
