On Sunday, May 26th, an Israeli airstrike on a camp for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, Gaza, resulted in the deaths of at least 45 people, drawing widespread international condemnation. The strike, which Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called a “tragic error,” has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

The airstrike targeted a compound in Rafah where, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), senior Hamas officials were operating. The explosion ignited a nearby fuel tank, causing a fire that engulfed the camp. The Gaza Health Ministry reported that most of the victims were women and children, with over 200 others injured.

The camp was declared a safe zone within Rafah for Palestinians to seek refuge from the ongoing invasion of Gaza, intensifying the outrage over the attack.

Footage from the scene showed chaotic and horrific scenes as civilians, including children, were pulled from the wreckage. Rescue workers struggled to extinguish the flames and search for survivors amidst the devastation. The United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack, stating, “There is no safe place in Gaza. This horror must stop.”

The incident has prompted urgent calls for a ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron expressed his outrage, while UN agencies and international humanitarian organizations demanded an immediate halt to hostilities. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) described the situation in Gaza as “hell on earth.”

The IDF stated that the strike aimed to neutralize significant Hamas terrorists but acknowledged the tragic consequences of the attack. The Israeli military has launched an investigation into the incident to determine the circumstances and ensure accountability. Netanyahu emphasized that the strike was conducted with prior intelligence and that precautions were taken to avoid civilian casualties.

The Rafah strike comes just days after the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel to halt its military operations in the area, citing the risk to Palestinian civilians. Despite this ruling, the IDF continued its operations, citing ongoing rocket attacks from Hamas as justification. The conflict has led to the displacement of over 800,000 people from Rafah since early May.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, with the UN Security Council scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to discuss the airstrike. Countries such as Egypt and Qatar, which have been mediating indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas, condemned the attack and warned of its impact on the peace process.
