MTA Expands OMNY to More Users by the End of 2024

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has announced significant milestones for the OMNY contactless fare payment system, aiming to extend its reach to all user categories by the end of the year. This expansion includes public school and CUNY students, reduced-fare and Access-A-Ride participants, and pre-tax commuter benefit users.

Starting in September 2024, all New York City public school students will receive student-specific OMNY cards, replacing the traditional MetroCards. This initiative is part of a broader rollout that will also see OMNY cards distributed to all existing Reduced-Fare MetroCard customers by the end of the year. Additionally, pilots for paratransit and pre-tax commuter benefit customers have begun, with a wide rollout expected by year’s end.

The MTA is enhancing the TrainTime app to integrate OMNY, enabling customers to use OMNY cards to purchase commuter railroad tickets. This integration aims to simplify the payment process and offer additional benefits, such as potential discounts and more flexible fare options. The TrainTime app has already proven popular, with a 4.9-star rating and a high customer satisfaction rate.

To support the expanded use of OMNY, the MTA has introduced 70 OMNY vending machines at 37 stations, with more planned across the city. These machines allow customers to reload their OMNY cards conveniently. The MTA plans to have vending machines in all subway stations by mid-2025, ensuring comprehensive coverage for all riders.

The transition from MetroCard to OMNY represents a major modernization effort for the MTA. “By treating OMNY as the megaproject that it is, we have turned a corner on delivering its benefits to all categories of customers,” said MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber. The MTA’s approach aims to provide a seamless and interoperable fare payment system while mitigating contractor risks and saving millions of dollars.

The MTA’s comprehensive rollout of the OMNY system underscores its commitment to improving the transit experience for all New Yorkers. By the end of 2024, the OMNY system will be accessible to a broader range of users, making transit payments easier and more efficient
